Day Trip - Toledo

Toledo is the former capital of Spain. Strategically placed on a hillside, it retains most of its city wall. Ultimately Madrid was chosen as the new capital because of its geograhic location in the centre of Spain.

As I visited on a Sunday afternoon, I didn't see any attractions except the cathedral. But walking through the old streets one feels the history of the place where people have lived for many hundreds of years, even before the Christian reconquest and Inquisition.

This timelessness is emphasised, ironically, by those who seeking to glorify themselves. Upon one edifice bearing a dedication by dictator General Franco is scrawled "Thank goodness he's dead"!
