El Escorial, like Toledo, is a day trip from Madrid. I had originally planned to visit Segovia but missed the train! Given the next one wasn't for two hours, Plan B!
Madrid is a vast, imposing Metropolis. By contrast, El Escorial is a country retreat some distance away, favoured by Felipe II. The Escorial is an enormous building that served as a palace and monastery. Those that meet me in the flesh may sight me wearing a souvenir T-Shirt.
Refreshingly, it's surrounded by woods. Mum and others may like the autumn leaves on the trees.
