Castellano

I will be staying in Donostia, the sleepy seaside site of the San Sebastián Film Festival for another 2 weeks.

It's really close to the border of France, so maybe I should visit for a day trip.

I've enrolled in a fortnight's tuition in Spanish. Hopefully I will be closer to fluency than any CAE course can provide. Otherwise, the language school has several affiliates in other cities such as Madrid and Sevilla.

It's not as expensive as it seems given I've been allocated a room in an apartment which is 25% cheaper than the hostal I've been staying in.

I now know a couple of basque words too:
  • pintxo - tapa or light snack served at bars.
  • eskerrik asko - thank you

Today's Age has an article about the decline of bull fighting in Spain - 70% of Spaniards say they are not interested in it - according to Anthony Ham - an Age correspondent based in Madrid. The industry employs about 150,000 Spaniards, but most of the spectators are older men or tourists, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to make ends meet financially in the industry. There is a push to ban them because of the cruelty to the bulls - likely to happen first in Barcelona & Catalonia.
Having accomodation for the course you are doing should help with every day conversations.

Hey Pete! After I missed your stay in my namesake-city San Sébastian I think the time has come to leave a comment now. Greetings from stone-cold germany - I'm ready to go traveling again! Especially when reading that others have the big fun. :) The first days of autumn have come and I'm already sick of the winter. Enjoy europe - and do everything I would do! :)
