Pirates of the Carribean 2:
Johhny Depp (Dead Man) again leads an star-studded cast including Camberwell resident Geoffrey Rush (Shine). A swashbuckling adventure much like the first. Highlight of the film was Captain Jack Sparrow's running style when escaping cannibals. Great fun! Trivia: saw actress Keira (Bend it like Beckham) onscreen alongside a German lass named Kira! 4/5
Sophie Scholl:
A German film in which Julia Jentsch (Fetten Jahre sind vorbei, Die aka The Edukators) stars as Sophie, a uni student taking up the cause of anti-Nazi propagandist during WWII. She and the underground cause she represented, "The white rose" are something of heroes in Europe for standing up to their subhuman oppressors. The focus is on Sophie, her brother and friends standing up to an evil regime. Their capture, trial and execution combines elements of Franz Kafka (The Trial) and George Orwell (1984). Chilling considering the events actually happened. 4/5
Junebug:
An 'indie' American film on the clash of civilisations between urbane, sophisticated big city America and 'backward' small town life. Poking fun at country life in parts ultimately is a sermon against yuppie materialism. Ben McKenzie (The O.C.) features. Covers themes of betrayal, miscarriage, dementia and integrity. Slow... 3/5
